ClickUp is a project management and productivity platform, often described as "one app to replace them all," that competes with Asana, Monday.com, and Notion. Founded in 2017, it reached a $4 billion valuation and about 1,300 employees, and like its competitors it charges per seat.
How LLMs Killed Them
Most 2026 layoffs came with careful statements that AI was not replacing anyone. ClickUp's did not. On May 21, 2026, CEO Zeb Evans cut 22% of the company, roughly 290 people, and described it as a full commitment to AI rather than a cost cut. ClickUp now runs about 3,000 internal AI agents, about three for every remaining employee. Evans said the goal was a "100x org," and that "the best engineers are not writing code any more. They are directing agents that write code." The remaining staff are sorted into "builders," "system managers" who own the agents, and "front-liners" who deal with customers. The savings pay for new salary bands of up to $1 million a year in cash for employees who create "outsized impact using AI." His advice to employees: "The people that automate their jobs with AI will always have a job." It is one of the clearest statements from any company that a smaller team working with AI agents is the plan.
