Cloudflare runs one of the largest networks on the internet — a global content delivery, DDoS protection, DNS, and edge-computing platform that sits in front of a meaningful share of all web traffic. Founded in 2009 and public since 2019, it grew to more than 5,000 employees selling security and performance infrastructure to millions of customers, from personal blogs to Fortune 500 enterprises.
How LLMs Killed Them
Cloudflare produced the single most explicit statement of 2026 about which jobs AI erases. In early May the company cut more than 1,100 people — roughly 20% of its workforce — in the same period it posted record revenue. CEO Matthew Prince did not blame the economy. He borrowed Peter Drucker's 1954 taxonomy of corporate roles — builders who make products, sellers who find buyers, and measurers who run the back office — and said the "vast majority of those we laid off last week were measurers": middle management, finance, legal, internal audit, revenue recognition. His argument was that AI now does that work better: "Tireless, independent, efficient and available, AI systems can now measure an organization with a level of objective detail and precision that was previously impossible even for the best employees." Prince and co-founder Michelle Zatlyn said internal AI usage had risen more than 600% in three months and that the company was restructuring teams and workflows for the "agentic AI era." It is a rare case of a profitable, growing company stating plainly that an entire category of white-collar work no longer needs humans in it.
